MOLD DESIGN

Whether starting from scratch or refining existing products, our xperts can quickly develop custom tools using 3D CAD software and our in-house CNC mill.

From initial sample tools to prototyping and production-quality molds, our experienced team of engineers can provide exceptional results throughout the project development cycle.

OPEN CASTING

In the open casting process, materials such as IsoGel®, PU, TPE or silicone are “poured” into an open mold.

Pittsburgh Plastics Manufacturing can open cast dual durometer parts, as well as multiple similar or dissimilar materials.

Open casting is utilized in the manufactureing of many of our foot care products

COMPRESION MOLDING

Compression molding is similar to making a waffle. It is ideal for parts made of medium-hardness compounds or softer and consists of:

  • Allowing a polymer to “flow” into a mold

  • Closing the mold and compressing it with heat

  • After curing, trimming off “overfill”

We specialize in compression molds for polymer gels, foams, and our new hybrid material GELoam® as well as products with and without fabric or films and rigid components

INJECTION MOLDING

Injection molding is a manufacturing process that allows us to handle a wide variety of materials. It accommodates single- and multi-cavity mold production for IsoGel®, other thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), thermoplastic urethanes (TPUs), nylon, polyethylene and polystyrene. It includes these steps:

  • Heating of material to “plastic flow” temperatures

  • Injection of material, under pressure, through sprues into the mold cavity

  • Simultaneous heating and cooling of molds to balance plastic flow and part solidification

THERMOFORMING

Thermoforming is the process of heating sheets of material and forming the material using a vacuum and/or pressure. Pittsburgh Plastics Manufacturing can thermoform plastic films and fabrics
